You have an enterprise all over the States promising the removal of unwanted hair. How much is hype? How much is believable? How much is credible?

Laser science has the same effect as a tweezer

Dermatologists are doing laser. Doctors are doing laser, dentists are doing laser, ophthalmologists are doing laser, optometrists are doing laser, facial people are doing laser. Everybody is in the laser business. And it is extremely profitable. I’m going to discuss the fact that it’s mainly profitable and not very effective. And therein lays the story.

When the first lasers hit the market, what was said was “One pass, comfortable.” Most of the original presentations came from a guy that bought a laser and 3 months later he’s giving a talk. Fantastic results. Well, with a tweezer you get fantastic results for 3 months or even 6 months, so that doesn’t count. The next year the same guy came back. “Well, a certain amount of hairs grew back. ”You know, the next year you do it again. And I’ll tell you in the third year, well, it needs more treatments.

Most of the people talking about laser now are saying it will take an indefinite number of treatments with no guarantee of permanency.

The science is lagging behind the marketing; the merchandising is way ahead of the technology. And until science comes back into play, and I see no evidence of that now, I think that, similarly to what happened with old-fashioned electrolysis, women, who are not dummies, are going to end up saying, “Boy, laser was a larger investment than I thought.
